What is Postherpetic Neuralgia?

Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN) is a complication of shingles that involves persistent nerve pain after the shingles rash has healed. This pain is due to nerve damage caused by the virus.

So, how does Postherpetic Neuralgia begin?

You get a strange, painful tingling on your skin. A few days later, a rash appears. This is usually the beginning of a shingles outbreak.

The rash and blisters last about 2-4 weeks, often accompanied by fatigue and pain. Most of the time, once the rash heals, the pain ends as well.

But for some people, the story doesn’t end

The lingering shingles pain can continue for years or even a lifetime. This is the persistent nerve pain that is called Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN). It’s a severe, chronic, burning pain that follows the same path the shingles rash took.

Symptoms of PHN

Here’s a series of symptoms you might experience if you have Postherpetic Neuralgia:

  • Burning, stabbing, or shooting pain: Often described as
    constant, sharp, or electric-like.
  • Hypersensitivity to touch: Even light touches, such as
    from clothing, can cause pain.
  • Numbness or decreased sensation: Affected areas may
feel numb or have reduced sensitivity.
  • Severe and debilitating pain: Can interfere with daily activities and lead to depression.
  • Long-lasting pain: Can persist for years or even a lifetime, significantly affecting quality of life.

Who’s at Risk?

Not everyone with shingles gets PHN. The risk increases with age, especially over 60. Severe or widespread shingles rashes and other immune system issues also contribute. This is why we offer a treatment program specifically for elderly patients with Postherpetic Neuralgia.

If you or someone you know is battling nerve pain, give us a call. Relief is possible, and we’re ready to guide you through it.
